A gentle reminder for the new year . . .
January holds hopeful possibilities in every area of our lives. It's a month to evaluate, reconsider, and dream. Yet, our moods can mirror the winter season, can't they? Sometimes we feel isolated and things seems bleak, similar to the barren trees and white winter sky above us. Even this is an invitation God reveals in nature — to find the beauty and solace in the slow and quiet. There's still beauty in the bleak, in the winters of our lives.

Maybe you need to know that it's ok if your goals are small or you have none at all.

Maybe you need to hear that asking God for the daily strength to endure is a sufficient task for today.

Maybe you need to simply be still and know God is with you, and he will direct your steps as you trust him.

“God may not save us from the hard things we are enduring right now. He may not rescue us in the way we think He should. I don’t know how God will use your circumstances for your good and His glory, but this is what I know – you are not alone, and God is at work. Take a moment to peer into the nativity scene and look at Joseph. The angel didn’t tell Joseph he would escape embarrassment, struggle, or attacks on his reputation. And yet, Joseph experienced the miraculous wonderworking of the Father as he became the earthly father of Jesus.”

1. Thank God for your Place on the Earth 🌎
Our little planet is but a dot, perfectly suspended and positioned within the vast galaxies God created to display his astounding greatness and intricate, infinite care. I shake my head at the wonder of it all — from the vast expanse of the sky to the tiny pattern on a butterfly’s wings — that the Creator generously crafted an astoundingly beautiful place for us to live.
What about you? What are you thankful for in the heavens and earth?

2. Thank God for your Place in the Nations 🇺🇸
No country is perfect, but that doesn’t negate God’s command to “give thanks in all circumstances.” When things feel dark and heavy, God has given us a simple way to shine light into the nations and into our hearts: give thanks.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8 NIV).

3. Thank God for your Place in the City 🏙
Think back to when you first moved to your current neighborhood within your town. Maybe you’ve lived there quite a while. Perhaps you moved recently. Consider who you’ve met because of where you live (neighbors, others within the community, those at your church and workplace). What blessings originate from this location?

I’m thankful for their deep impact on my life and how God teaches me so much about myself and this life of faith — using these five amazing people.

I’m thankful for the story God has written for each of their lives and the grace to be a part of the chapters.

I’m thankful for what their strengths and weaknesses have taught me about myself.

I’m thankful for moments we’ve shared together:

🔸Memories of adventure, celebrations, and milestones

🔸Times we shared tears and times we laughed until we cried

🔸Moments of loss and pain and moments of joyful delight

I’m so glad God gave us other people to walk beside, hold hands with, practice forgiveness with, share good times and challenging times with, and listen, laugh, and cry with.

What a gift.

When you list what you’re thankful for, I’m gu

When you list what you’re thankful for, I’m guessing family and friends are at the top of your list.

We absolutely should thank God for the loved ones he has placed in our lives.

But here’s a gentle nudge for the month of November: don’t stop at their names or even the apparent blessings they’re experiencing.

Let’s go deeper in our gratitude for others.

How?

I’m not an expert on gratitude, but I’m practicing three ways to give thanks for the people I love — beyond just saying their names.

1) Considering the impact they’ve had on my life.

2) Reflecting on what their strengths (and weaknesses!) have taught me.

3) Rejoicing in shared moments together by thanking God for their presence through ups and downs, laughter and tears, the big occasions and ordinary days.
